Providing services in rural areas presents specific problems,
many of which are common to all service providers. These
problems include
• additional travelling costs
• additional time required to deliver a given
level of service • delivery costs are higher: sparsity as opposed
to density of populations leads to lack of
critical mass • more service outlets are needed in order to
make a given service accessible to a smaller
population
Running services in rural areas costs more than it does in
more densely populated areas. However little, if any, allowance is made by government for these factors.
The additional costs of providing services to rural areas
are not being met by additional government funding, and
as a result, rural communities lose out. Members of rural
communities often receive a smaller range of services, or
lower quality services, as compared to people living in
population centres. Service providers in rural areas are
penalised because of the topography of the area they service.
We want to correct this inequity. We believe that the way to do this is through a new national organisation,
representing the interests of all rural service providers. |
